Abstract

This study was carried out to investigate the allelopathic potential of neem leaf aqueous extract and rice husk on the growth and yield of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.). Four varieties of tomato seeds were collected from the National Centre for Genetic Research and Biotechnology and were subjected to treatments of neem leaf aqueous extract, rice husk and water which serve as control at three different growth stages. The pots were irrigated with 500 ml of tap water per day. The experimental design was factorial experiment in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). Apparent growth parameters investigated were height of plant, number of leaves, area of leaves, number of branches, stem girth and yield components such as number of fruits, weight of fruit, length of fruit, diameter of fruits, lycopene determination, chlorophyll determination. The growth parameters were stimulated with decreasing concentration and retarded with increasing concentration. Data were subjected to statistical analysis and means were compared using Least Significant Difference (LSD).
